COVID case at Royal Freemasons
• A Royal Freemasons staff member who worked at Coppin Centre last weekend has been identified as a close contact of someone who has returned a positive Coronavirus test. The staff member was tested on Monday, and on Thursday returned a positive result. As instructed by theDepartment of Health of Human Services, the outbreak management plan has been implemented within the home as a precautionary message. “This involves the implementation of PPE including gowns, gloves, masks and face shields within the home and residents are being cared for within their rooms,” said Tanya Connor, Chief Operations Officer.

Lodge opens its bar to public
• The Derbyshire Masonic Lodge (UK) has used the COVID-19 period to refurbish its building, including modernising its bar, to which members of the public will be invited to share a drink. Derbyshire Live has produced a video to show how local Freemasons are using their premises to enjoy freelowship, help recruit new members, as well as pay the bills. LINK

How one Victorian Lodge is addressing dues
• One Victorian Lodge which sends its Summons to FVNews Daily is addressing the matter of dues with this notice: “In view of the financial position of the lodge and the deductions in Grand Lodge dues and rent charges it has been decided to freeze lodge dues for the first six months of the current financial year and review them again on 1January 1, 2021, as we are currently unable to attend and conduct masonic memorial services.”

Who are they?
• Jim Basham writes: “You are doing a great job on the FVNews. I look forward to every issue. Thank you. Just a cheeky query: Who or what is “Kyneton Gentlemen’s Association”? I’ve been around for a while, but they are totally unknown to me. Not being a Masonic Lodge, an explanatory note might also influence attendance by others. Now I’m off to Google them for myself.”
• Editor replies: We are told that the Kyneton Gentlemen’s Association is a group of Freemasons who meet on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for an informal coffee. During the COVID restrictions they are meeting by Zoom, and visitors are welcome. EMAIL

Masonic Mailbag
• John Parsons writes: “each morning it’s nice to see what good charitable news FVNews Daily has in that day’s issue regarding whatFreemasonry has done for humanity worldwide. Earlier today I had a surprise knock at the door. the caller said “I am from Anglesea Lions, here is A Goodwill Pack for you put together by the Lions Club and Community Bank (Bendigo of Anglesea. This contained several items which will be of assistance during this period. As a Freemason for just on 60 years and former Secretary for a couple of Lodges (not a member of either organisation, or though many Freemasons are) I can vouch for the difficulty of raising funds at times. Today it’s extra hard for all. But, the type of project Lodge could take on no matter how small in their local community and even use a ‘local partner” such as the Salvation Army for possible recipients. Let me say I really feel the joy of receiving the thoughts and“Goodwill’ at this time. So praise when praise is due. Finally, a thank you to all in Lions and Bendigo management.”

Cookbook deadline soon
• Wayne Motton advises that the deadline for his Masonic COVID Cookbook is in the coming week. This is a last opportunity to submit your receipe and photo. In return, you will receive a free copy of the eBook. EMAIL

World News
• “Local water safety, search and rescue services from Fairlight to Camber (UK) have been given a boost by a timely donation to the Pett Level Independent Rescue Boatcharity by St Leonards-on-Sea based Freemasons from the White Rock Masonic Lodge,” reports One News Page.• “Turning to social media for help, the charity put out a community appeal for desperately needed PPE. The appeal was seen by Sussex Freemason and member of White Rock Lodge, Darren McCarthy who, through the Lodge, purchased and organised the delivery of the much needed PPE including six boxes of disposable gloves, six boxes of masks and 10 litres of antibacterial hand gel, complete with dispensing pumps. The Lodge has also donated an additional £100 to support the work of the charity.” LINK

Famous Freemasons
• Burton, Sir Richard Francis (1821-1890) – Burton was a British explorer, translator, writer, soldier, orientalist, ethnologist, spy, linguist, poet, fencer and diplomat. A larger than life character, he was known for his travels and explorations within Asia and Africa as well as his extraordinary knowledge of languages and cultures. According to one count, he spoke 29 European, Asian and African languages.• Burton’s best-known achievements include; travelling in disguise to Mecca, an unexpurgated translation of One Thousand and One Nights (also commonly called The Arabian Nights in English after Andrew Lang’s abridgement), bringing the Kama Sutra to publication in English, and also journeying with John Hanning Speke as the first Europeans led by Africa’s greatest explorer guide, Sidi Mubarak Bombay (utilising route information by Indian and Omani merchants who traded in the region), to visit the Great Lakes of Africa in search of the source of the Nile.- Timothy Horton

Masonic Knowledge
• “Freemasonry has always stood for fairness, tolerance, non-discrimination, inclusiveness, self-improvement, giving to others and supporting the less fortunate in society. Freemasons act in a way that is honest, ethical, law-abiding and sets a good example. Although our traditions and symbols date back centuries, the values they represent are timeless ones that transcend religious or political differences. We believe they are as relevant today as they have ever been.• “We are not a religion and we encourage members to follow their own diverse faiths. In fact, discussing religion and politics is forbidden inLodges. Long ago Freemasons realised that these topics are the source of some of the greatest divisions and disharmony between men and so we focus on areas of harmony rather than disagreement. To become a Freemason, a man must be ‘of good character’ and acknowledge aSupreme Being, whatever name he calls it by.”- Freemasons Queensland

Masonic Wisdom
• “Truth-telling, I have found, is the key to responsible citizenship. The thousands of criminals I have seen in 40 years of law enforcement have had one thing in common: Every single one was a liar.” – Bro. J. Edgar Hoover

Small World Department
• James Trigg emails: “Your newsletter has enabled me to make contact with Bro. Jim Jolly, who, like myself is a former Worsopian (we come from the town of Worksop in Nottinghamshire UK). His link to a Lodge there enabled me to find an email address for the Lodge. A note I wrote to that Lodge to say g’day was replied to by a  brother who is the grandson of a friend of my late parents from the late 1940s until we left the UK in 1957 for Canada. More power to your pen for producing this newsletter.”
