COVID-19 recovery stages

• Garry Runge, Grand Secretary, has issued this message: “Freemasons Victoria welcomes the direction of the COVID-19 recovery stages announced this week by the State Government. This approach is for cautious steps to take place over coming months to arrive at a ‘COVID-normal’ position. The Freemasons Victoria Board of General Purposes was early to decide that all Victorian Masonic Centres and Lodges would remain closed until at least 31 December 2020, and that position remains the same. It is constantly under review.

• “With an average membership age of 68, many of our members are within the most vulnerable groups. Their health requires the utmost diligence from us as an organisation. Freemasons, of all people, are familiar with ‘steps’ and ‘being cautious.’ It is pleasing that the easing of restrictions will allow some small groups of Lodge members across the State to meet in outside locations, and commercial cafes and restaurants, on a limited social basis. There are a number of rules to observe, and all members are encouraged to follow these regulations.

 • “The Freemasons Future Recovery Team, which comprises expert members with backgrounds including medicine, insurance, logistics and legal, will continue to closely monitor developments, and make recommendations to the Board when it is timely to do so. The Board and Team will continue to be in close communication with members as we head towards a better 2021. We take this opportunity to sincerely thank all members for their sensible approach and patience during this unprecedented health challenge.”

The Robert Calvi Affair

• Melbourne Cup Eve (Mon., Nov. 2) sees Lodge Garibaldi host members of North Melbourne Lodge and other visitors. The talk is by Mike Kearsley (UGL England), on ‘The Roberto Calvi Affair & ‘Masonic’ Lodge P2 – a Masonic Scandal?‘ “He tells the story of P2 lodge, the Mafia, the Vatican and the Banco Ambrosiano set within the context of Italian independence and the influence of Freemasonry,” says Nikolas Sakellaropoulos. LINK

Masonic Mailbag

• Graham Barnett writes: “I never was a fan of social media but your forum has changed all that. Thank you so much for bringing us masons across the globe that much closer together. Couldn’t do without my (FVNews) daily fix. Keep up the good work.”

Masonic Orphan Asylums
The Conway Daily Sun (New Hampshire, US)reports: “Masonic orphan asylums were commonplace, but Masonic schools were rare. The New England Masonic Charitable Institute was a private school offering a three-year co- educational program. The first class, in the fall of 1861, had 55 students (27 male, 28 female). In 1862, there were 146 pupils (87 male, 59 female). The orphaned children of Masons were admitted for free, with other students paying tuition as well as room and board.” LINK

World News
The Australian Financial Review reports: “A refurbished former Masonic hall in Redfern on the Sydney city fringe has caught the eye of Perth media mogul Kerry Stokes. Property records show Mr Stokes’ private investment company Australian Capital Equity paid $10.5 million for the striking two-level brick building at 19-25 Cope Street, which has been transformed into stylish open-plan offices for film production company Luscious. It is unclear what he intends to do with the building. A spokesman for Mr Stokes declined to comment.” LINK

Famous Freemasons
• Wimble, Frederick Thomas (1846-1936) – Originally from London, upon moving to Melbourne, Australia, Frederick Wimble became an Australian printer and pioneer printing ink manufacturer, a skill learned from his father. Wimble was the founding editor of The Cairns Post newspaper and became a politician within the Queensland Legislative Assembly. He was a long-time Freemason and a member of the United Grand Lodge of NSW.
– Timothy Horton

Masonic Knowledge
• “The Mason who says: “Trade with me because I am a Mason” is seldom a good merchant. Certainly he has no pride of calling or willingness to stand on his own feet. The Mason who says: “Trade with me because I give good goods at an honest price” is upholding the dignity of his calling, and scorning to take advantage of his Masonic brotherhood for the sake of making more money. The man who must depend on Masonry to enable him to keep his store open is not a good Mason.” – MasonicDictionary.com

Masonic Wisdom
• “Freemasonry has endured not because of its antiquity, its influence, or its social standing, but because there have been so many who have lived it. The effectiveness of Masonic teachings will always be the measure by which the outside world judges Freemasonry; the proof of Freemasonry is in our deeds and it is in our deeds that Freemasonry is made known to non-Masons. The only way that the Craft can be judged is by its product. The prestige of Freemasonry lies squarely on the shoulders of each of us.” – Bro. G. Wilbur Best

The Last Word
• “I ask of each Mason, of each member, of each brother, that he shall remember ever that there is upon him a peculiar obligation to show himself in every respect a good citizen; for after all, the way he can best do his duty by the ancient order to which he belongs is by reflecting credit upon that order by way in which he performs his duty as a citizen.” – Theodore Rosevelt
