Foundation Delivers Annual Report

• Philip Mayers, incoming Freemasons Foundation Victoria Chairman, has thanked former Chair Myles King for his service. In the Foundation’sAnnual Report, Philip has also thanked Timothy Clark, a director from 2014-20. “The Foundation continues to support lodges in their philanthropic activities in both metropolitan and country areas, and funds are set aside for this purpose. Lodges are a vital connection with their local communities, and understand them best; they know where the real needs are and also contribute funds that they have raised – which are often matched (or exceeded) by the Foundation.”
• Philip said that $566,000 was received which included support from Freemasons Victoria, Masonic Lodges, interstate and overseas Masonic organisation and individuals. “In respect of disaster relief, the Foundation distributed $526,000 to fire-affected areas. Of this sum, $56,000 went to Freemasons, $370,000 to organisations impacted by the fires, or assisting people impacted by the fires. $100,000 went to provide assistance to farmers impacted by the fire in the Alpine region. $306,000 has been distributed as part of the COVID-19 support.”

$12.1 mil. in philanthropic support

• Philip Mayers said that “since our establishment as a Foundation in 2014 we have been able to grant a total of $12.1m in philanthropic support”. He continued: “As mentioned, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a serious impact on the needs of the people of Victoria and the way in which theFoundation operates. One of the first tasks of the Board of Directors after the AGM will therefore be to review our strategic plan to ensure that it reflects the realities of the social and economic environment, and the prudent management of our funds under management. JBWere have ably helped us to steer our way through these challenging times, and I want to thank them for their professional advice and wise counsel, which has helped the Foundation to contribute to the welfare of our Victorian community.”
• “On behalf of our Directors (and our former Chairman Myles King) I want to thank Neil Cripps in his role as Executive Officer and Jacintha Chiang for the

administration of our business. The ravages of 2019-2020 have put a strain on our resources, and we owe our appreciation to them for enabling us to achieve our objectives of supporting the community without a hiccup.”

$1.8m gift over 6 years

• Freemasons continue with a  $1.8m gift over six years to Monash Health. The Board has agreed to divert some funding from the purchase of medical equipment to COVID-19 research projects. A full list of awardees is at this LINK

For the record

• We were asked this week about the funds involved in producing FVNews Daily. Our questioner seemed surprised when we replied that all work for this publication is done free by the Communications and Marketing Volunteer Action Team. So no Freemasons Victoria funds at all are involved. The funds (about $2000 annually) for the website hosting, domain registrations, and daily email dispatch through an SMTP server are wholly donated. The Comms VAT asked for a zero budget for 2020-21, believing – especially in tough economic times – that its projects should be funded either voluntarily or by donation. The Freemasons Victoria Marketing Team (paid staff members of the Grand Secretariat) continue to operate on a lean annual budget for items such as publications, website and organisation marketing.

• “One evening after a brother had been a guest at an installation, he had partaken of too much wine, and his host was very worried, as he did not want him to drive home in his present state which was some distance away, so insisted that he stay the night at his house, and travel home the next morning, and after much persuasion this is what he did.
• “When he got home the next morning, his wife was furious with him because he had forgotten to phone, and she did not believe his story about staying with a brother because of the state he was in, but wondered if he had been with another women, however she pretended to believe him, by asking how the ceremony had gone, and asked how many other brethren had been there and all the regular questions that wives do ask, and he told her that it had been an excellent Lodge meeting and that 65 brethren had turned up etc. However at the next Lodge meeting when the secretary rose to read out correspondence, he read a letter from the wife asking if the brother where her husband had stayed the night after the last lodge meeting would please write to her and confirm his story that he had stayed the night at his house because he was unfit to drive home. The next day in the post she received 64 letters.” – Bro.
