1. Honour for Len Jinnette

• After the Samaritan Lodge meeting to be held on Thursday, May 20, there will be a Dedication Ceremony to Len Jinnette. The Ante Room as Ivalda Masonic Centre, Darebin, will be named ‘Len’s Lobby‘. The Ceremony will be carried out by Barry Reaper. There will be signage and a framed citation displayed of Len’s contribution to Freemasonry in general and the Ivalda Temple in particular.

2. Special Night for Howard Purcell

Don Reynolds, Past Grand Master, will officiate at a 60-Year Bar Presentation to Howard Purcell tonight (Thu.) prior to the Ivanhoe Grammarians Lodge meeting at Ivalda Masonic Centre. The presentation will take place at 7.15pm, which will allow wheelchair-bound Howard and his wife Bev to be present. After the presentation, the meeting will tyle at approx. 7.30pm for a Second Degree ceremony.

3. Coppin Shop volunteers needed

• The Ladies Auxiliary at Royal Freemasons (Homes) is seeking volunteers to staff The Coppin Shop at Moubray St. All profits from Shop at Coppin go towards purchasing commodities that help make life more comfortable for the residents in the home. Over the past 20 years the current Ladies Auxiliary has funded/purchased: two buses, furniture for several rooms in the nursing home, artwork, the ‘Garden of Tranquillity’, sewing machines and equipment for the lifestyle program, garden seats, eye testing equipment, sound loops and adjustable electric beds. If you are looking for a volunteering opportunity, please contact Melanie McNamara on 0417 089 267.

9. Famous Masonic Characters
• Bro. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. “That The Magic Flute is a barely veiled Masonic allegory cannot be doubted. It acts, in fact, as a kind of introduction to the secret society. Its story celebrates the main themes of masonry: good vs. evil, enlightenment vs. ignorance, and the virtues of knowledge, justice, wisdom and truth. The evocation of the four elements (earth, air, water and fire), the injunction of silence in the Masonic ritual, the figures of the bird, the serpent and the padlock as well as the ‘rule of three’ all play important roles in the plot or in the musical fabric of the opera (three ‘Ladies’, three ‘Boys’, three loud chords at the beginning of the overture signifying the three ‘knocks’ of the initiates at the temple, three temples, the three flats of E-flat Major which is the primary tonality of the work, etc.) All of these symbols and characteristics come from Egyptian lore and the various original texts of Masonry; hence the opera’s libretto is set in Egypt, although many productions eschew that specification.” San Francisco Opera Education

10. Masonic Knowledge
• “In the realm of politics, the first third party in the United States, the Anti-Masonic Party, formed in 1828 in response to fears that the group was growing too secretive and powerful.” – The History Channel

11. Masonic Wisdom
•  “It is the custom of this Grand Jurisdiction to present candidates for the degrees a copy of the Bible or the holy book of their individual faith. The timing of the giving is up the Master of the Lodge and Lodge custom. In some Lodges it is given at the end of the First Degree while in others it is given at the end of the Third Degree. When presenting the Bible or holy book, it is presented open as a symbol to the candidate that it should be opened and read frequently.” – White Plains Lodge, New York.

12. The Last Word
•  ““Glass, China, and Reputation, are easily crack’d, and never well mended.” – Bro. Benjamin Franklin

13. Vale John Turnbull

• We regret to advise of the passing to the Grand Lodge Above above of RWor. Bro. John Turnbull PSGW on Monday (May 3). Bob Rampling said: “John had suffered a fall a short while back, and had been admitted to hospital. Since his discharge, however, he had not been doing well and had been deteriorating.

Last Monday, John’s son Wesley presented John with his 60-year Craft jewel and certificate at John’s daughter’s house where he had been staying.

John was a pillar of the Revival Lodge in particular and Freemasonry in general and his advice and support to the lodge and to its members will be greatly missed.”

14. Vale Bruce Tippett

• We regret to advise of the passing to the Grand Lodge Above above of J.W.B.Bruce’ Tippett on Tuesday morning (May 4). He was a member of Sir Dallas Brooks Daylight Lodge. He was a Freemason for 69 years.
