Vale Murray Treseder
• We regret to advise of the passing to the Grand Lodge Above of RWor. Bro. Murray Treseder, PJGW. “Murray had been suffering for some time and went peacefully in Swan Hill with his family by his side. He served as Senior Deacon in the 1999-2000 Grand Lodge Team, he was a Professional Land Valuer for many years serving as Advisor and Valuer to several Shires. He did serve on the Freemasons Finance Committee in that capacity, and was responsible for many Lodges gaining rates relief. His death is a great loss to the Craft,” said Neil Gannon.
Take it for Granted
• North East District 108 posted on social media: “Great news. The Benambra Lodge application for the $99,880 from the Freemasons Foundation has been accepted for the Upper Murray Fencing Project. They can now get started on the initial stage of clearing the fence lines. A Zoom meeting is planned for next Tuesday, to establish the way ahead.”
First ‘South’ in Australia
• Lodge Middle Harbour (NSW) members are sharing the news of the first meeting ‘South’ being held in Australia for five months.
Try Online
• Ben Quick, Secretary of The Golden Fleece Lodge, writes: “Many thanks to you and the Communications VAT for doing your very best in keeping us all connected. It’s great to see the challenge presented before us is being taken up by many Lodges; I would also encourage those Lodges who haven’t met to try the online platform, they will be pleasantly surprised by the enthusiasm of Freemasons wanting to join with them to participate and show their support.”
Reading: ‘Behind The Veil of Secrecy’
• Live Science publishes a report on the Craft: “Freemasons have managed to remain mysterious for hundreds of years. Freemasonry, known popularly for its white aprons and arcane symbols, is the world’s oldest fraternal organisation. Despite its longevity, Freemasons have long been shrouded in mystery. To outside observers, the organisation’s rites and practices may seem cult-like, clannish and secretive — even sinister. Some of this stems from Freemasons‘ often deliberate reluctance to speak about the organization’s rituals to outsiders. But it is also partly the result of many popular movies and books, such as Dan Brown’sThe Da Vinci Code (Doubleday, 2003), that have fostered misconceptions or depicted the order in an unflattering light. • “In reality, however, Freemasonry is a worldwide organisation with a long and complex history. Its members have included politicians, engineers, scientists, writers, inventors and philosophers. Many of these members have played prominent roles in world events, such as revolutions, wars and intellectual movements.” READ MORE
Communications Success Stories
• Royal Freemasons at Benalla has won positive publicity in the Shepparton News with a story about a frequent visitor: “Sammy the cat has had to get used to new restrictions when he takes one of his regular trips to Royal Freemasons Aged Care. Sammy the cat has been visiting residents of Royal Freemasons Benalla with his owner Judy Rosco since last year. However, he is struggling to understand why his trips to fall asleep on the windowsill or on the end of a resident’s bed have been replaced by waving from behind glass.” LINK (there may be a paywall, but you register for one free view).
World News
•Powys Country Times reports: “One of Welshpool’s oldest societies has stepped forward to help local mental healthharity, Mid and North Wales MIND.Welchpool Lodge of Freemasons, who have met in the town since 1864 have presented a cheque for £2500. A spokesperson said, “We are delighted to continue our ongoing support for local charities that benefit the residents of Welshpool. “Charity and support for charities is very much at the heart of what we believe as an organisation.” LINK
What’s On: How You Can Assist
• Lodges can assist by sending emails about every lodge meeting and event to editor@FVNews.com.au
Please include us on your Lodge Summons mailing list.
On The Square
• Paul Brennand, Grand Superintendent of Membership, talks about the ‘Square’ device which Lodges can use to accept Card transactions such as Visa, Mastercard and American Express. Often it is inconvenient for members to write cheques, or make direct payments. Many Lodges use the ‘Square‘ payment system. The device costs $59. For example, members can pay their dues when turning up to Lodge, without any fuss.• In charity fundraising, the ‘Square’ card reader makes it much easier for people to make a donation. There is a flat fee of 1.9 per cent per transaction. A popular use is at Bunnings sausage sizzles where people often don’t have cash. A Lodge auction was held to raise funds for a major project and far more was raised by having this system available. A raffle selling tickets to win a trailer load of firewood was successful, but there were many more people who would have purchased, had they had this system.• There are a number of similar products available. We are not here to promote a particular brand. But consider such a device for your Lodge to process transactions in a 21st Century way.
Famous Freemasons
• Brahms, Johannes (1833-1897) – Brahms was a German composer and pianist, and one of the leading musicians of the Romantic period. Born in Hamburg from a poor background, Brahms spent much of his professional life in Vienna, Austria, where he was a leader of the musical scene. In his lifetime, Brahms’ popularity and influence were considerable; following a comment by the 19th Century conductor Hans von Bülow, Johannes Brahms is sometimes grouped with Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven as one of ‘The Three Bs’.

Masonic Knowledge
• Bro. Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, (September 29, 1758 – October 21, 1805), KB. Renowned admiral and hero of the Royal Navy. William Denslow states: “A writer in the Freemasons’ Quarterly Review in 1839 claimed Nelson and his servant, Tom Allen, were Freemasons, but gives no evidence to support his claim. Hamon Le Strange, in his History of Freemasonryin Norfolk, says that among the furniture of theLodge of Friendship No. 100 at Yarmouth, there is a stone bearing an inscription to Nelson. On one side of the stone is an inscription commemorating the foundation of the Lodge of United Friends No. 564 on August 11, 1697, and on the other side the inscription: “In Memory ofBro. V. Nelson of the Nile, and of Burnham Thorpe, in Norfolk, who lost his life in the army of Victory, in an engagement with ye Combin’d Fleets of France and Spain, off Cape Trafalgar, October 21, 1805. Proposed by Bro. John Cutlove.” At the Masonic Hall, Reading, may be seen a framed print with a representation of a banner carried at Lord Nelson’s funeral. It bears the following words: “We rejoice with our Country but mourn our Brother.” It was carried at the funeral by York Lodge No. 256.”
