$99,980 cheque presentation
• Neville Wiggins, North-East District Co-Ordinator, advises that a $99,980 cheque presentation is to take place tomorrow (Wed.), with support from Freemasons Foundation Victoria. The money will go towards helping burn-out farmers in the Corryong and North-East region.
• The Freemasons Victoria Communications and Volunteer Action Team has suggested that appropriate media outlets to cover the ‘good news’ story might be Corryong Courier, Border Mail, Wangaratta Chronicle, Ovens and Murray Advertiser, North East and Goulburn Murray Farmer, Weekly Times and Country News. ABC and commercial radio and TV outlets in the North-East and Goulburn Valley could also be helpful.
• Do you have any contacts at any of these media outlets so that we can maximise the media coverage for Freemasons Victoria and theFoundation? Please contact Neville Wiggins today on 0418 118 427.

Masons help Interchange (1)
• John Poke and Peter White write: “Children who have a disability are able to access programs and obtain support from Interchange Outer Eastfunded by the NDIS.  However, the siblings of the children who have a disability do not receive any funding for support or assistance. RWor. Bro. Keith Thornton approached the management at Interchange Outer East some 12 years ago to seek out a project that Monash Gully District Lodges could support.

• “It was at that time that the Sibling Program was established assisting young people who have a disabled brother or sister.  This program is totally funded by the District Lodges. It has become the District fundraiser each year and Lodges assist with their fundraising all working together to make this program count for those who desperately need it.  It is well supported by the Freemasons Foundation.”

Masons help Interchange (2)
• John Poke and Peter White continue: “The program provides recreational activities which allow siblings to come together and take part in activities like camping in the bush and trips to the coast to enjoy some activities at the beach. Through these activities they discover they are not alone.
• “They meet other young people in similar circumstances who have a disabled brother or sister. They look out for each other and support each other whenever they meet. They turn a negative into a positive and so they focus on their own development at school and their life learnings. It is wonderful and after all these years there are now young people who are attending university and others in the workforce doing a trade who may not have seen the possibilities for themselves without the support of the program.”

Masons help Interchange (3)
• John Poke and Peter White conclude: ” Having spoken with parents they really value this program because of the support it brings to their families. I met one family who approached Interchange to care for their disabled child; at the time there were no vacancies.  But they were told that there was a weekend activity coming up which they would be most welcome to attend.
• “This they did, and it was a great introduction for this family to the Interchange network.  It was not too long before their disabled child was able to enter the nominated program and the siblings were just so grateful and continued to be engaged in the Siblings Program.

• “It is a wonderful privilege for Freemasons to assist those who desperately need our support and care. This we must continue to do. For further information on the Sibling Program follow this LINK

VAT advice for publicity
• News teams at local newspapers, radio and TV stations are stretched as never before because of budget cuts and Coronavirus restrictions.
• Lodges seeking publicity should not assume that media representatives will be able to attend events, particularly after hours and at weekends. Those days are gone.
• Lodges seeking publicity will have to do the “hard yards” themselves. You will need to write sharp media releases. Put everything that you want known in a first paragraph of 19 words. Assume everything might be edited. Avoid the temptation to give the complete history of our news event over past years.
• Provide crisp photos taken on a real camera. Media is in the eye-contact business. Have 2-3 people maximum in each photo. You must include the first name AND surname, from left to right, of every person in your photo. Include lots of names in your reports.
• Remember to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ to the media representative. Don’t feel entitled to the media space or time. We have to compete for it.

‘All negative tests’
• All results received from the first round of testing at the Coppin Centre (Royal Freemasons) have returned negative. A further round of testing will be conducted this Thursday (Sept. 3).

Masons Connect Survey
• Matt Cameron advises of a seven-question survey.”Can social media help you connect?” There are Masons Connect workshops about how people make sense of what they read on the internet. SURVEY

‘Everyone has a phone’
• Deidre and Peter Crick, on behalf of Geoff Newby (Gippsland East), remind: “I have suggested that Lodges organise a phone tree including all Brethren and Widows to make sure contact is made with everybody. Not all people have a computer for emails but they do have a phone.”

World News
• VOCM Local News Now reports: “The pandemic situation has forced the Spirit of Newfoundland to put the historic Masonic Temple on the market. Kathy Hicks says the pandemic has been brutal for businesses like theirs that rely on audiences to survive. She says the Spirit of Newfoundland will persevere, but the cost of keeping the building going was too great. It was a heartbreaking decision to sell the building she calls an “architectural jewel.” LINK
