Remembrance Day Taping

• Graham Berry advises that Epicurean Lodge in conjunction with Bellarine and Otway will be holding a Zoom Meeting to commemorate Remembrance Day on the evening of Tuesday, November 10, as approved by Richard Elkington, Grand Master.

• “We will be filming next Tuesday (Oct. 27) at the Torquay War Memorial, with 10 people all social distanced. There will be an abbreviated Vacant Chair ceremony, with the Grand Master in attendance to lay a wreath on behalf of Freemasons Victoria.” A video will be produced, with music from Jim Taylor, and any prayers and other audio into a finished 20-minute video to show on the evening.

• “We have a special 5-minute video from Senator Major General Jim Molan to screen. There will be a second speaker, an entered apprentice, Lt Colonel Kyle Tyrell, from Geelong Lodge of Unity and Prudence.The Evening will be hosted by John Patterson, PDGM.

• Cost is $10 per person, partners and non-Freemasons welcome, via Trybooking. Once booked, a link will be emailed to you closer to the date with the Zoom event. Lodges may wish to contribute to the evening, and can donate into Epicurean bank account. Details to come.

OXI Day on Wednesday
• OXI Day – ‘The Day of the No’  will be commemorated by Lodge Gregorios at 8pm on Wednesday (Oct. 28). This is the day that that Greece, rejecting the ultimatum to allow free entry to the Axis troops, entered World War II. St John’s Days

• Freemasons historically celebrate two feasts of saints who are both named John. The feast of John the Baptist falls on June 24, and that of John the Evangelist on December 27.  During the 18th Century, the Premier Grand Lodge of England and the Grand Lodge of Ireland favoured the day of John the Baptist, while the Grand Lodge of Scotland, the Ancient Grand Lodge of England and the Grand Lodge of All England at York installed their Grand Masters on the feast day of John the Evangelist.
• The first Grand Lodge was formed on June 24, the feast day of John the Baptist in 1717. This may arise from a very old tradition, since the Baptist appears to have been regarded as the patron of stonemasons in continental Europe during the Middle Ages. The guild of masons and carpenters attached to Cologne Cathedral was known as the Fraternity of St John the Baptist. The earliest surviving record of Grand Lodge of Ireland installing a Grand Master is dated to June 24, 1725. As records of individual lodges appear in Ireland and in the Antients in England, it seems many of them met to install a new master twice a year, on the feast days of both the Baptist and the Evangelist.
• The Evangelist is particularly associated with Scottish lodges. The Lodge of Edinburgh was associated with the aisle of St John the Evangelist in St Giles Cathedral from the 15th century. The Grand Lodge of All England, and its predecessor, the Ancient Society of Freemasons in the City of York, elected and installed their President, then from 1725 their Grand Master on the day of the Evangelist, and in London the Antient Grand Lodge of England elected their new Grand Masters on the same day. When the Antients and the Moderns (the Premier Grand Lodge) eventually came together in the United Grand Lodge of England, it was on the Feast of the Evangelist in 1813..

Masonic Knowledge
• Masonic Etiquette. “You must immediately obey the gavel. Why? Failure to immediately obey the gavel is a grave discourtesy and very poor Masonic Etiquette. The Master is all powerful in the lodge and his word is final. He can put or refuse to put any motion. He can rule any brother out of order on any subject at any time. He can say what he will, and what he will not permit to be discussed. Brethren who think him unfair, arbitrary, unjust, or acting illegally have redress. The Grand Lodge can be appealed to on any such matter. However, in the lodge, the Master’s gavel, which is his emblem of authority, is supreme.

 When a brother is rapped down, he should obey at once, without any further discussion. It is very bad manners to do otherwise. In fact, it is perilously close to the line between bad manners and a Masonic offence. Masonic etiquette decries anyone who does not obey the gavel.”
