Vale John Austin

• We regret to advise of the passing to the Grand Lodge Above of Wor. Bro. John Murrell Austin, amember of Gippsland Forest Lodge No. 101 on October 29. Wor. Bro. John was a member of the Bunyip Lodge No. 626 for many years until its closing.  He was Tyler for many years.

Vale John Chanter

• We regret to advise of the passing to the Grand Lodge Above of RWor. Bro. John Chanter, PDGM, 24/10/1940 – 7/11/2020, aged 80. Garry Runge, Grand Secretary, says: “It is with deep sadness that I write to inform you of the passing of RWBro. John Chanter, PDGM. RWBro. John passed away peacefully in hospital last night (Thurs.) after a long illness.= Our sincere condolences are extended to his wife Libby and family at this most difficult time. Details in relation to RWBro. John’s memorial service will be communicated to you from this office once details become known.” John was a Freemason for 57 years.

• Stuart Chalmers, Secretary of Malvern-Waverley Lodge of Mark Master Masons No 39, says: “John was a member of the Mark Degree for 50 years, joining Caulfield Mark Lodge No.  82 on May 1, 1970, and subsequently transferring to Malvern-Waverley Mark No. 39 where he was Worshipful Master for the 2012-13 year. He was presented with his 50-year jewel  prior to his passing while in care.”

$5000 Cheque Presentations

• Michael Buckley, Torquay Food Aid; Margaret Renkin  Anglesea/ Aireys Inlet Foodlink; Angie Hunt, Anglesea War Memorial Appeal; Bob Pullin, Lodge of the Great Ocean Road.  

• Bob Pullin, Worshipful Master of Lodge of the Great Ocean Roadd, No. 886, helped to present cheques for $5000 each to three local charities, with the assistance of the Freemasons Victoria Foundation. Recipients were Torquay Food Aid, Anglesea and Aireys Inlet Foodlink and Anglesea and District War Memorial Appeal. Michael Buckley, President of Torquay Food Aid, said that the demand for their services since Coronavirus struck has been enormous and he was extremely grateful for the support of the lodge. Bob said that local Freemasons were showing the community that we really care about those less fortunate.

$10-pay-per-view for Legacy

• Graham Berry encourages BOOKINGS for the Vacant Chair Ceremony to be aired on Tuesday (Nov. 10), ahead of Remembrance Day. This is a $10 pay-per-view event, with proceeds to be donated to Legacy. John Patterson will be MC for the night. There will be an address by Senator Major-General Jim Molan. LINK

The Great Debate

• A debate – ‘That we should be able to read the ritual’ – will be held online from 7.30pm on Monday, November 30. The Victorian Lodge of Research in conjunction with the Education Volunteer Action Team will present the first in a series of on-line debates. These debates will focus on contemporary issues relevant to Freemasonry in Victoria.

• Two teams, of three members each, will vie to convince of the merits of their argument. The Affirmative Team is led by Kent Henderson, whilst the Opposing Team is led by Harry Pitaro. Attendees will get to decide the winning team by a Zoom poll that will be open towards the end of the debate. Host for the evening is the current Master of the Victorian Lodge of Research, Chris White.

Masons Meet In Person

• Members of St George Lodge, Dunolly, will meet in person for a pre-Christmas Barbecue at 6pm on Monday next week (Nov. 16). Ken Calder says: “Masks will be compulsory unless eating and social distancing is to be observed.” Friends and family are invited. A limit of 70 applies, but if more attend they will look to split into separate groups. RSVP to Ken by Thursday (Nov. 12).

Good Grandfathers

• We often promote Freemasonry as an organisation that helps men become better husbands, better fathers and better men. Given that our average age is 68, perhaps we should add that our teachings include how to become grandfathers. Seniors.com.au publishes a guide that says it is often the grandparents that are the people who assist teenagers navigate their way if they are LGBTIQ. These are often tough conversations to have. The Better Health Channel offers signposts to the various services that are available.

World News

• Redlands Community News (California, USA) reports on the Job’s Daughters Bethel organisation celebrating its 100th Anniversary. “Job’s Daughters is a youth organization affiliated with the Masonic Lodge. They learn about organizational leadership, community service and fundraising while having fun and developing friendships. Cari Reich of Beaumont said, “I still have friends from when I was in Job’s. It’s like a sisterhood.” LINK

Famous Freemasons
•  “Smith, Admiral Sir William Sidney (1764-1840) – Sidney Smith was the British admiral of whom Napoleon Bonaparte said, “That man made me miss my destiny”. The remark followed Smith’s imaginative and successful defence of Acre (on the coast of modern day Israel) against the siege of 13,000 French Regulars led by Napoleon himself. Smith bombarded the French from the sea and from the town and, in May 1799, Napoleon withdrew. Smith served much of his naval career in the Mediterranean acting against Napoleonic forces. In the style of Admiral Nelson, Smith was a dynamic leader whose star should have shone brighter, but Nelson disliked Smith and Nelson’s influence held back his career. In 1811, Smith was made a fellow of The Royal Society of London; a society formed from members of the “Invisible College” by Freemasons in November 1660.”
