1.  Grand Master’s Doings
• Grand Master Richard Elkington recorded a 30-minute interview video, reflecting on his life, and the part that Freemasonry has played. VIEW

• Richard participated in the St John’s Day Zoom meeting last Friday (June 24).

• Richard attended part of the Peace and Loyalty Lodge Installation at Ferntree Gully conducted by Deputy Grand Master Anthony Bucca last Saturday (June 25). He had also attended the Knights of Constantine on the same day.
• The Grand Master has attended various Chapter and Mark functions, representing the Craft.

• As Victorian Grand Master, Richard will be involved in discussions involving interstate, national and international Masonic matters, in Brisbane.

2. Communications Topics
• One of the law firms that acts for Freemasons Victoria advises that the identity of a previously-anonymous social media post author has been revealed in another client’s case. This follows Australian court orders requiring Twitter to divulge a troublesome internet user’s ‘IP’ identification, leading to a requirement that Telstra reveal that person’s identity and service address. It is believed that similar success is expected from another case where the true identity of a ProtonMail account holder is to be revealed via IP ‘discovery’. Some ProtonMail users have been under the mistaken impression that their identity would be forever shielded. The social media lesson for Freemasons is that there is no such thing as an anonymous post; that each individual must be accountable for any defamatory statements that they have made. An Australian court this month ordered Google to pay $715,000 to a man who was subject to a “relentless, racist, vilificatory, abusive and defamatory” posts.

• An expanded Social Media Policy, with input from the Freemasons Victoria Integrity Unit led by Peter Henshall, is in its final stages of preparation.
• Xavier Murtagh, a senior member of the Communications and Marketing Volunteer Action Team, will be presenting the second part of his paper on optimal use of digital media on Wednesday, July 6. The Grand Master and Grand Secretary were in attendance for Part One.

3. Pithy Paragraphs

• Alex Dingey will be presented his 75-Year Service Jewel on Monday, July 11, at Lodge of Commerce meeting at Freemasons Melbourne, tyling at 6.30 pm.Alex will recount his many pleasurable years in Freemasonry, including his 23 years as Grand Secretary of CHAMAR. His highlights include representing Grand Mark at the Installation of HRH Prince Michael of Kent as Grand Master, and centenary celebrations and amalgamation of Tasmanian Mark and Ark with the Victorian Constitution. Bookings via https://www.trybooking.com/926105• Three nominations have been lodged for the position of Deputy Grand Master for 2023-25. In alphabetical order, they Peter Henshall, Myles King and Garry Runge. The Deputy Grand Master Selection Panel will meet on Saturday, August 6.

8. Foundation Success Story• Ivanhoe Grammarians Lodge emailed the principals of about 130 local primary and secondary schools in its region, inviting applications for $250 and $500 bursaries for needy students. As well as contact details, it asked only for the student’s first name, and a pitch of less than 100 words by email from the principal. The Lodge passed a resolution to spend $2000 from its own Benevolent Account, and to request any balance from Freemasons Foundation Victoria. In the end, an additional $9150 was requested when the Lodge submitted its Smarty Grants application prior to the May 31 deadline. A detailed submission was compiled for the Foundation, including a copy of the correspondence from each school.
• The Lodge heard back this month (June) that its application was granted in full. The Lodge is expected to tip in an extra $1000 to fully fund some late applications. The Foundation will pay the funds into the Lodge bank account, and cheques will be presented to each of the School principals by members of the Lodge, with Foundation representatives to be invited to attendPhotos will be taken for local media publication.

• Background: For 70 or so yearsthe Lodge had its focus on funding needy students at Ivanhoe Grammar School. Pre-COVID, Lodge members decided to turn their focus to needy students at less advantaged schools.
