From The Editor

• The Communications and Marketing Volunteer Action Team is a bit excited with this issue of FVNewsit has a record-breaking 212 ‘What’s On’ listings from Lodges around Victoria. That growth reflects the vibrancy of the Masonic family across Victoria. What a strong fraternity. When we started FVNews back in April 2020 (224 issues ago), there were just seven paragraphs, and we set out to grow it ‘organically’. That first issue included a video about how to use Zoom; haven’t we come a long way since then? We would like to thank Brethren, Victoria-wide, for their ongoing support of FVNewsPlease keep sending your contributions.

• CONSIDER if there is a Masonic link to a new Australian 50-cent coin?

9. Communications: How long should your talk be?• How long should your Lodge talk be? Experts say “shorter than you think”.

• Long boring speeches are a self-indulgence of the speaker, and fail to hold the attention of the audience. Long boring speeches are toxic to member retention.
• David Nihill says “a tight five is better than a sloppy fifteen”. READ MORE

• Lyn Roseaman warns against “infobesity”. Timing is just as important as content. READ MORE
• Gray-Grant Communications advises that a major speech should be 20 minutes maximum, divided into five parts: Introduction: 2 minutes (250 words).Point 1: 5 minutes (625 words). Point 2: 5 minutes (625 words). Point 3: 5 minutes (625 words). Conclusion: 3 minutes (375 words). Total word count: 2500 words (20 minutes). READ MORE
• Hrideep Barot
suggests impromptu speeches (this could apply to Visitors’ Toasts) should be 1-2 minutes. Practised speeches should be 5-8 minutes maximum. Chris Anderson says about keynote talks: ““18 minutes is long enough to be serious and short enough to hold people’s attention. By forcing speakers who are used to going on for 45 minutes to bring it down to 18, you get them to really think about what they want to say. It has a clarifying effect. It brings discipline.” READ MORE

10. Freemasonry in Ukraine• Knut Ratzeburg writes: “I am currently in Ukraine, quite a stress to get here, also got COVID at the arrival but all good now. Most lodges work now again, yet in hotel rooms or private apartments – clandestinely. Our lodge has cancelled lodge fees as the financial burden on the members is currently very high, inflation, petrol… so they asked only for voluntary donations if any brother can do it. Most foreign brothers are still in Exile, Turkey, Italy, France or Moldova – or moving around between different places.• “Out of fear we are working in street clothes and all communications were moved from Viber to Signal as it is safer, or so we hope. Since the lodges split up and are meeting in different places We got or have to get new equipment like batons, wands, wand stands, working tools etc etc. Does Grand Lodge still have something stored from lodges that had been closed?
• “Kyiv is more or less ok at the moment, there are military posts everywhere and a curfew after 11pm. Supermarkets and shops and restaurants all close at 9pm. I was in Church yesterday and there are air alarms, but no rockets so far. Some came down in the north of Kyiv in Vyshgorod. The biggest concern now I guess is the nuclear power plant in Zaporishcha. Our own lodge work is being conducted in a small cellar room of 18 sqm with 14 brethren. Most are in good spirits except those who suffer economically the most, so those better off are trying to help those suffering the most-to their abilities…
• “That is the situation here. I guess after the direct attacks on Kyiv are mostly over it is now the economical and partially humanitarian crisis we have to deal with: some lost their homes, cars, yes also some lost family members. So within the lodge we try to support as best as possible.”
