1. ‘The Queen and the Craft’

• For the past 70 years, every Lodge at every meeting has honoured the Toast of ‘The Queen and the Craft’. It is with profound sorrow that we record the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on Friday (Sept. 9), AEST.
• Grand Secretary Bruce Cowie said: “”The thoughts of all Freemasons in the State of Victoria, Australia, are with the Royal Family as they grieve for their Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. The Queen demonstrated extraordinary dedication and commitment to duty throughout her Reign and did so with graceful strength and admirable determination. The Queen ruled through the decades of change, from the dark post-war years through to the new horizons of the 21st century, providing continuity for the nation and thereby to those nations of the Commonwealth. • “Many who do not know each other will, as a result of public grief, come together to mourn a national figure who has been consistent throughout our lives and for whom we have enormous affection despite not knowing her personally. The thoughts, prayers and continuing loyalty of all Brethren are with the Royal family on this very sad occasion.”

2. Paying Our Respects

• Bruce Cowie, Grand Secretary, advises that the following protocols are to be observed:• During the period of mourning no Masonic Fires are to be given. The mourning period will conclude on December 8, 2022.
• All Lodge Summonses issued prior to the funeral are to have a black border.
• The Loyal toast is now “The King and the Craft”
• All photos of the Queen are to have their frames draped with a black cloth. The Queen is to remain visible and only the outer borders (top, left and right) covered. The photo should be removed following the funeral and replaced with a photo of the King.

• The following prayers are to be read at the First Time of Rising in Lodges:
• WM: “Brethren, you will please rise and turn to the East for prayer”.
Chaplain: “Almighty and Eternal God, we ask Thee to take into Thy keeping the spirit of our beloved Queen Elizabeth II of most happy memory. Grant unto her a crown of everlasting righteousness; number her amongst Thine elect and may she find favour in Thy sight. Bless and comfort all the members of the Royal Family in this hour of sorrow”. So Mote it Be

• WM: “Brethren, please join with me in a minute’s silence’
The second prayer read for the King: “Almighty God, who rulest over all the kingdoms of the world, and dost order them according to Thy good pleasure; we yield Thee thanks even in the midst of our sorrow that Thou hath been pleased to set Thy servant Charles to be our King. Let Thy wisdom be his guide and let Thine arm strengthen him. Let truth and justice, peace and charity abound in his day. Direct all his counsels and endeavours to Thy glory and the welfare of his subjects. Let him always possess the hearts of his people. Let his reign be long and prosperous”. So Mote it Be

World News• The United Grand Lodge of England, at its WEBSITE, stated: “It was with the greatest sadness that the United Grand Lodge of England learned of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, our longest serving British SovereignQueen Elizabeth’s father, His late Majesty King George VI and her consort, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, were both Freemasons. Her cousin, HRH The Duke of Kent, has been Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England since 1967, and will be sending a message of condolence on behalf of all English Freemasons to His Majesty The King. 12. Our People

• Ray Wyld writes about the installation of Jim Goudie at Hearts of Oak at Bayside on Thursday night (Sep. 9). “Thanks to Past Grand Master Richard Elkington’s great recall for events and Masonic friends recalled that there were three Past master of Gippsland Lodges in 1982-83: Past Grand Master Richard was Master of Heyfield Lodge; Stuart McMillan, Grand Herald, was at Stratford, Maffra and Avon Lodge; and Ray Wyld was Master  of Sale/Gippsland.  Visiting in that era was the normal part of Freemasonry so our paths often crossed from Orbost to Warragul. What a coincidence that after 40 years we would meet again in a Lodge temple in Melbourne Bayside, a long way from our initial meetings.”
