8. The Caledonians

• Tom Stirling writes: “An era of Freemasonry is diminishing and sadly may come to an end in Victoria. It is the Caledonian Demonstration Team; most of the current members are in their eighties and despite many attempts to recruit new blood have been unsuccessful.• “The group was formed in the early fifties by the many Scots who emigrated to Australia at that time, many of them in the western suburbs of Melbourne, where there was a lot of heavy engineering taking place, Massey Ferguson and International Harvester for example. Most of these tradesmen were also Freemasons and soon made themselves known among the local fraternity and integrating into the various lodges in the area. However, the locals soon got fed up with these Scots reiterating these familiar words; “That’s no how we do it in Scotland”. The response being  “show us” and that is how the Demonstration Team started, with degrees being worked at Sunshine and Footscray areas to start.
• “As a young Mason, some 50 years ago, one can still remember the ritual being delivered by members of the team, with no prompting being given or needed and the fact that they moved without a DC and they still do the same but with each member delivering the ritual in his own way so you can never see the same ceremony twice. Word soon spread about this new group among the lodges and by the late sixties were travelling to all points of the compass within Victoria and on a few occasions, interstate to South Australia and NSW.
• “In the early days they worked as a lodge, with its own notice paper. Looking at an old notice paper they were performing demonstrations four or five times a week, they had the members to do it in those days, most members being able to cover many of the charges. As well as degree ceremonies, the Team also carried out Installations, mostly for those of Scottish heritage. In these formation days it was decided that any monies raised by the group would go to aid our Freemasons Hospital and The Homes. In this current period, we let the lodge where we demonstrate decide on which charity the money will go to. Blaze Aid, Red Cross, Anglicare, 2020 Bushfire Appeal, Taralye to name a few. Since the group’s inception the total funds raised for Masonic and other groups would be in the region $300,000-$400,000. So there are still some Caledonians available to demonstrate some of the skills and are available upon request.”
