Dispensation for Merbein

John McTaggart, Junior Grand Warden, represented Richard Elkington, Grand Master, at the United Memorial Merbein Lodge No. 327 when they observed Remembrance Day by performing the Vacant Chair Ceremony. With dispensation the lodge meeting was held at the Mildura Pistol Club where the lodge room was set up in the open on one of the ranges.  John was escorted into the Lodge by members of the 2020 Grand Lodge Ceremonial Team namely David Elwood, David Game, Robert Callant, Russell Sincock, Peter Dillon-Shallard and Ray Gibson. Peter Henshall and Peter Woods  both played important roles in the ceremony and were also part of the escort.

John andaccompanying Grand Officers were welcomed by Gary Pearse. Members of the Lodge conducted the Ceremony of the Vacant Chair which included an oration by Peter Henshall who explained the significance of the red poppy, and the poem In Flanders Fields  by John McCrae

 • There were around 40 brethren in attendance which included a number members from local district lodges who at the conclusion of the meeting adjourned to the South and enjoyed a light supper and a touching toast to the spirit of the day proposed by Joe Watson.


Peter Thornton Memorial Lecture (1)
Brendan Kyne advises: “To commemorate Bro. Peter Thornton’s work and achievements in the field of research into the history of Freemasonry in Victoria the Grand Master Richard Elkington, the Education VAT and the Victorian Lodge of Research announce the inaugural Peter Thornton Memorial Lecture. The  Lecture is open to any Freemason in Victoria, with the winning entry to receive $2500 to assist him to deliver his Lecture at lodges around Victoria.• The winning Lecturer will be presented with his award certificate and ‘cheque’ at a Quarterly Communication of Grand Lodge, at which he will also deliver the initial presentation version of his winning paper.

Peter Thornton Memorial Lecture (2)• Eligible papers have to be at least 5000 to 10,000 words in length and be on some aspect of the history of Freemasonry in Victoria.  A contestant must be a financial member of Freemasons Victoria. Entries are to be submitted to the Secretary of the Victorian Lodge of Research no later than February 28, 2021.  Any paper submitted that is not selected as the winning paper will automatically be considered for future Peter Thornton Memorial Lectures.• The winning contestant agrees that first publication rights of his paper are ceded to the Transactions of the Victorian Lodge of Research.
• A selection panel consisting of members of the Victorian Lodge of Research will choose the winning paper. The Selection Panel reserves the right not to make an award if no submission is of a suitable standard. Papers and any queries can be directed to the Secretary of the Victorian Lodge of Research, Brendan Kyne, lordbiff@hotmail.com

GM lays wreath at Wonthaggi

• Alan Tyndall writes: “Richard Elkington is pictured at Wonthaggi, on one of his first official outings since the Grand Installation. He laid a wreath at the Remembrance Day Ceremony accompanied by the WM and members of the Wonthaggi Lodge. The ceremony also included a special dedication to the members of Lodges in the area who had fallen on the fields of battle.”
