New Chair of Foundation (1)
• “The outgoing Chair of the Freemasons Foundation, Philip Mayers, is delighted to announce the appointment of Rodney Lavin as Chair, and both Xavier Murtagh and Peter Henshall as Directors of Freemasons Foundation Victoria, effective from the Annual General Meeting held on November 18.
• Philip Mayers said that Rod Lavin had been an outstanding director of FFV and was the unanimous recommendation of the Board. Apart from his great service to the Foundation, Rod is a CPA, serves as a Justice of the Peace and is Vice President of the Honorary Justices Association of Victoria. He is partner in a successful financial planning business in Traralgon and is a former Councillor of the City of Berwick.
• “Xavier Murtagh is the current Worshipful Master of Old Scotch Collegians Lodge and is affiliated with several other lodges. He is a Google Certified Professional specialising in strategic public relations and online marketing. He is actively involved with a number of community groups and charitable causes including Royal Children’s Hospital, The Salvation Army and Uncle Bob’s Club.
New Chair of Foundation (2)
• “Peter Henshall joins the Board with a wealth of experience in both the Commercial and Masonic spaces. Professionally, he has held a number of senior commercial and management positions, including Grand Secretary and CEO of Freemasons Victoria, which he held for six years until his retirement in December 2016. Other senior Masonic positions held include Grand Treasurer and Senior Grand Warden.
• “Philip said Rod Lavin was assuming leadership of FFV at an exciting time in the Foundation’s history since the Foundation is seeking to establish itself as a leading philanthropic body in Australia.”
GM visits Old Melburnians
• Richard Elkington, Grand Master, writes: “Popped into a very interesting meeting of Old Melburnians tonight. The Lodge had invited its three forthcoming candidates, all relatively young, to attend and they had been invited to ask questions about Freemasonry and its future. The answers were provided by nine members of the Lodge and the answers also promoted further discussion.
• “A wide range of topics was covered ranging from “What’s the difference between Lions, Rotary and Freemasonry?” to “ What do you believeFreemasonry will look like in 100 years?” Another highlight of the meeting was the playing of a Zoom recording of the Vacant Chair Ceremony, conducted by Captain Cook Lodge in Yorkshire. This was a first-class ceremony with much to contemplate.”
Williamstown helps Sleep Bus
• The Chronicle, a fine newsletter by Williamstown Lodge, reports: “The Lodge raised $500 from our Melbourne Cup Sweep – this was ‘topped’ up by a further amount of $2000 from the Foundation and then donated to a locally based charity called Sleep Bus. Sleep Bus is an organisation that provides a bed at night for the homeless.”
Video on District Grand Lodge of Nigeria
• Craig Spendlove sends this LINK to a video we are yet to view. “In 1905, the Grand Lodges of Great Britain and Ireland promulgated a concordant, which made it quite clear and unambiguous that in a Masonic district such as ours in Nigeria, in which the three constitutions, England, Ireland and Scotland are firmly established, the three mother Grand Lodges in Great Britain and Ireland will not recognize the formation of any indigenous Grand Lodge unless the three local jurisdictions merge into one. However, this was not to be. https://www.grandlodgeofnigeria.org It is an interesting video, with the many references that many of us have heard in our very own Lodges.”
Foundation Education Awards
• Neil Cripps advises: “Freemasons Foundation Victoria’s Education Awards for secondary and first year tertiary students open on December 1, 2020.

Masonic Knowledge
• Masonic Etiquette: “What is the place of Masonic etiquette in the Craft? It has no “SPECIAL” place. It has every special place! It is ALWAYS observed whenever or wherever Masons assemble, or speak, or act in the name of the Craft! For that reason, it is described as “Masonic.” If it belonged to the Ritual of the Degrees a Master might conceive it to lie outside the span of his responsibility.”
Masonic Wisdom
• Five points of
The Last Word
• There are four types of men in this world:
1. The man who knows, and knows that he knows; he is wise, so consult him.
2. The man who knows, but doesn’t know that he knows; help him not forget what he knows.
3. The man who knows not, and knows that he knows not; teach him.
4. Finally, there is the man who knows not but pretends that he knows; he is a fool, so avoid him.
– Solomon ibn Gabirol (from the Warrnambool Lodge of Mark Master Masons)
