3. Scholarship Fund at Bendigo
• David Beagley writes: “One of our [Bendigo Masonic] scholarship winners, from a few years ago, has just been announced as Victorian Young Australian of the Year. Darcy McGauley, a former student of Crusoe Secondary College in Kangaroo Flat, has been working with Victoria Police to create the state’s first Aboriginal Youth Cautioning Program, to ensure all young Indigenous people are eligible for a caution when coming into contact with the justice system for the first time. READ MORE We gave Darcy his scholarship in 2014, when he was in Year 10, to encourage him to stay at school and persist – obviously, he has! The Bendigo Masonic Scholarship Fund has been operating for some 30-odd years in Bendigo and Eaglehawk, offering scholarships to students in Grade 6 and Year 10 at local public schools. The two criteria are that the students have shown outstanding contribution to the school culture through personal achievement and active support of fellow students, but have also faced personal hurdles such as financial, social, medical or personal issues. The awards are made on school recommendation. We give 8-10 scholarships a year, totalling around $3500, relying on support from the lodges and orders of Bendigo as well as most welcome contributions from the Freemasons Foundation.”
